The present document consists of a collection of information pertaining to the clinical cases seen by the student during her externship at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) at University of California Davis in which she participated in clinical rotations in the services of Small Animal Medicine, Soft Tissue Surgery, Neurology & Neurosurgery and Oncology. The student completed a total of 459.5 hours at the VMTH. During this time, a total of 263 cases were seen, 39 of which were assigned to the student. The diseases with the highest prevalence in each service were chronic kidney failure in Small Animal Medicine, osteosarcoma in Soft Tissue Surgery, intervertebral disc disease in Neurology and lymphoma in Oncology. The student had the opportunity to familiarize herself with cutting edge diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in line with the latest advances in veterinary medicine worldwide, including magnetic resonance imaging, fluoroscopy, scintigraphy, positron emitted tomography, ambulatory electroencephalogram, interventional radiology and minimally invasive surgical procedures. The author provides a case report of an acute tumor lysis syndrome in a canine patient with lymphoma and offers an in-depth discussion about the predisposing factors, pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria and therapeutic approach of this disease, along with the electrolyte and acidbase derangements of this oncologic emergency.
