Homenaje tardío al maestro Ciro F. Santana Cardoso

Abstract

Si o los humanos, al menos los historiadores deberíamos ser más concientes de la ubiquidad e inevitabilidad de la muerte; si así fuera no tendríamos que honrar post mortem a quienes, tendríamos que haber reconocido, en vida, por su labor y contribuciones. En el caso del Dr. Ciro Flamarión Santana Cardoso, la mía no es la mejor pluma para escribir en su memoria, pero intentaré valorar su contribución a toda una generación que aprendió a vivir en esa década tan particular de 1970, entre cuyas vivencias estuvo aprender de él. En el curso de Metodología de Investigación Histórica de la Universidad de COsta Rica, el Dr. Cardoso incluyó contenidos que luego serían divididos en varias publicaciones, desde una discusión sobre el estatus científico de la historia, una repasada a la evolución de la historiografía para comprender el origen de la Escuela de los Annales y una discusión de las contribuciones a la historia desde las otras ciencias sociales. Como si esos contenidos fueran poco, explicó las metodologías existentes para historia demográfica, historia económica e historia social, explicando debidame el contexto y características de su evolución. Se abrió ante mis ojos la riqueza de una realidad social compleja, cambiante y medible en sus diferentes ritmos. Intenté seguir su vastísima producción intelectual, bien en libros o accediendo a videos de conferencias que impartió en distintas partes del globo; sin embargo, este no es un ensayo sobre sus aportes como historiador, sino una evaluación de lo que significó su presencia en Costa Rica.

In the case of Dr. Ciro Flamarión Santana Cardoso, mine is not the best pen to write in his memory, but I will try to value his contribution to a whole generation that learned to live in that very particular decade of 1970, among whose experiences he was learning of the. In the Historical Research Methodology course at the University of Costa Rica, Dr. Cardoso included content that would later be divided into several publications, from a discussion on the scientific status of history, a review of the evolution of historiography to understand the origin of the School of the Annales and a discussion of the contributions to history from the other social sciences. As if these contents were not enough, he explained the existing methodologies for demographic history, economic history and social history, explaining to me the context and characteristics of their evolution. The richness of a complex, changing and measurable social reality in its different rhythms opened before my eyes. I tried to follow his vast intellectual production, either in books or by accessing videos of conferences he gave in different parts of the globe; However, this is not an essay on his contributions as a historian, but an evaluation of what his presence in Costa Rica meant.
