Comportamiento del Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) en tres humedales en la cuenca baja del Río Tempisque, Costa Rica.

Abstract

El jabirú (Jabiru mycteria, una de las tres cigüeñas del Neotrópico, es la cigüeña más grande de América y depende de los humedales para etapas críticas de su ciclo de vida. Es una de las aves acuáticas que requiere atención en Costa Rica por estar considerada como ave en vía de extinción y por desempeñar un papel importante en el equilibrio ecológico en los humedales. En este estudio se realizaron observaciones directas del jabirú en tres humedales de la cuenca baja del Río Tempisque: Laguna Mata Redonda, Laguna Corral de Piedra y Laguna Palo Verde, con el fin de determinar los patrones de comportamiento del jabirú durante la época reproductiva. La recopilación de información se efectuó entre diciembre de 1998 y marzo del 2000 en LPC, en abril de 1999 en LMR y entre mayo de 1999 y marzo del 2000 en LPV. Luego de haber seleccionado al individuo focal se procedió a registrar, por periodos de 15 minutos, los patrones de comportamiento del jabirú. En cada uno se determinó, cada 20 segundos, la actividad que estaba realizando en individuo focal en ese preciso momento. Una vez finalizados los 15 minutos, se esperó 30 minutos para seleccionar otro individuo focal o continuar observando al jabirú seleccionado en primera instancia. De nuevo se volvió a realizar el procedimiento antes descrito. Al final del periodo se registraron 14 horas de observación de patrones de comportamiento de la especie.

The jabirú (Jabiru mycteria, one of the three storks of the Neotropics, is the largest stork in America and depends on wetlands for critical stages of its life cycle. It is one of the aquatic birds that requires attention in Costa Rica because it is considered as a bird in danger of extinction and for playing an important role in the ecological balance in wetlands In this study, direct observations of the jabirú were made in three wetlands of the lower basin of the Tempisque River: Laguna Mata Redonda, Laguna Corral de Piedra and Laguna Palo Verde, in order to determine the behavior patterns of the jabirú during the reproductive season. The collection of information was carried out between December 1998 and March 2000 in LPC, in April 1999 in LMR and between May 1999 and March of the 2000 in LPV.After having selected the focal individual, the behavior patterns of the jabirú were recorded, for periods of 15 minutes. In each one, it was determined, every 20 seconds s, the activity that the focal individual was performing at that precise moment. At the end of the 15 minutes, it was waited 30 minutes to select another focal individual or to continue observing the selected jabiru in the first instance. Again, the procedure described above was carried out again. At the end of the period, 14 hours of observation of behavior patterns of the species were recorded.
