Pasantía en clínica y cirugía ortopédica y traumatológica en especies menores, en el Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres de la Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria de la Universidad Nacional y Clínica Veterinaria Vicovet, Costa Rica

Abstract

Este trabajo consistió en una pasantía en la Clínica Veterinaria Vicovet (CVV) en San José, Costa Rica y en el Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres (HEMS) de la Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria de la Universidad Nacional, Heredia, Costa Rica, con una duración total de 401 horas en un periodo de diez semanas.

Durante este periodo, se trabajó en el área de Ortopedia y Neurología de la CVV y el área de Ortopedia y Traumatología del HEMS, en donde participó en consultas, en la ejecución de pruebas diagnósticas como radiografías digitalizadas y tomografías computarizadas, tratamientos médicos así como en la intervención pre, trans y post quirúrgico temprano de los pacientes que acudieron a dichas áreas por padecimientos musculoesqueléticos.

En dicho periodo, se presenció un total de 97 cirugías ortopédicas, de las cuales, el 81.44% (79/97) fueron en la CVV correspondiente a un periodo de ocho semanas y 18.56% (18/97) en el HEMS durante dos semanas. Del total de cirugías, las más comunes fueron las empleadas para tratar la ruptura o enfermedad del ligamento cruzado craneal 32.90% (32/97), luxación patelar 16.40% (16/97), luxación o displasia coxofemoral 15.40% (15/97) y fracturas 12.30% (12/97). Por su parte, la técnica que más se empleó para la RLCC fue la TPLO con un 77.50% (31/40), extracapsular 20.00% (8/40) y por último la TTA con un 2.50% (1/40).

Adicionalmente se describió más detalladamente y analizó un caso de displasia de cadera bilateral moderada en un Golden Retriever de cinco meses, al cual se le realizó la técnica DPO en ambos miembros, en distintos tiempos quirúrgicos.

This work consisted of an internship at the Vicovet Veterinary Clinic (CVV) in San José, Costa Rica and at the Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres (HEMS) of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the National University, Heredia, Costa Rica, with a total duration of 401 hours in a period of ten weeks.

During this period, it was worked in the area of Orthopedics and Neurology of the CVV and the area of Orthopedics and Traumatology of the HEMS, where she participated in consultations, in the execution of diagnostic tests such as digitized radiographs and computed tomography, medical treatments as well as in the pre, trans and early post-surgical intervention of patients who attended these areas for musculoskeletal conditions.

In this period, it was witnessed a total of 97 orthopedic surgeries, of which 81.44% (79/97) were in the CVV corresponding to a period of eight weeks and 18.56% (18/97) in the HEMS for two weeks. Of the total number of surgeries, the most common were those used to treat cranial cruciate ligament rupture or disease 32.90% (32/97), patellar luxation 16.40% (16/97), hip dislocation or dysplasia 15.40% (15/97) and fractures 12.30% (12/97). For its part, the technique that was most used for RLCC was TPLO with 77.50% (31/40), extracapsular 20.00% (8/40) and finally TTA with 2.50% (1/40).

In the present final graduation work, a case of moderate bilateral hip dysplasia in a five-month-old Golden Retriever is described in more detail, who underwent the DPO technique in both limbs, at different surgical times.
