Pasantía en especies menores en el Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres HEMS-UNA, Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria, Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica; y Hospital Veterinario INTENSIVET, Costa Rica

Abstract

Se realizó una pasantía de 11 semanas en total entre el Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres de la Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria de la Universidad Nacional (HEMS-UNA) y el Hospital INTENSIVET. Se atendieron 133 (100%) pacientes, de los cuales 110 (83%) fueron caninos y 23 (17%) fueron felinos. Durante las cinco semanas en el HEMS se atendió un total de 70 (53%) casos, mientras que en INTENSIVET se atendieron 63 (47%) casos en un transcurso de seis semanas. Las consultas referentes a ortopedia fueron predominantes en el HEMS, seguidas por las del sistema digestivo. En el caso de INTENSIVET, las consultas del sistema digestivo fueron las más comunes, seguidas por las de ortopedia. Se participó en 62 procedimientos quirúrgicos entre ambos centros hospitalarios. Las cirugías ortopédicas fueron las que más se realizaron, esto en ambos centros. Se realizaron 134 (100%) imágenes diagnósticas, siendo 44 (33%) de ultrasonido, 67 (50%) de radiografía y 23 (17%) de endoscopía. El ultrasonido de abdomen fue la prueba más realizada en ambos hospitales, seguido por la radiografía de miembros. Se abordó y profundizó un caso de interés, el cual corresponde a un canino macho el cual ingresó al HEMS en estado de emergencia debido a hemoabdomen. El mismo se diagnosticó con tumor en hígado, siendo este un hemangiosarcoma grado III.

Durante la pasantía se reforzaron las destrezas clínicas, quirúrgicas y las referentes a la toma e interpretación de imágenes diagnósticas.

An 11-week internship was carried out between the Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres of the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (HEMS-UNA) and the INTENSIVET Hospital. One hundred thirty-three (100%) patients were attended, of which 110 (83%) were canines and 23 (17%) were felines. During the five weeks at HEMS a total of 70 (53%) cases were attended, while at INTENSIVET 63 (47%) cases were attended over the course of six weeks. Consultations regarding orthopedics were predominant in the HEMS, followed by those of the digestive system. In the case of INTENSIVET, digestive system consultations were the most common, followed by orthopedics. Sixty-two surgical approaches were attended between both hospitals. Orthopedic surgeries were the most performed, this in both centers. One hundred thirty-four (100%) diagnostic imaging tests were performed, 44 (33%) being of ultrasound, 67 (50%) of radiography and 23 (17%) of endoscopy. Abdominal ultrasound was the most performed test in both hospitals, followed by limb radiography. A case of interest was addressed and deepened. The same corresponds to a male canine which was admitted to the HEMS in a state of emergency due to hemoabdomen. He was diagnosed with a tumor in his liver, this being a grade III hemangiosarcoma.

During the internship, clinical and surgical skills and those related to taking and interpreting diagnostic images were reinforced.
