Desarrollo de una distribución GNU/Linux basada en Ubuntu para generar una solución personalizada para la Universidad Nacional que apoye el quehacer universitario

Abstract

El siguiente proyecto de graduación consiste en desarrollar una distribución GNU/Linux personalizada para la Universidad Nacional (UNA) que sirva de apoyo a las labores de los funcionarios universitarios en el desempeño de sus funciones diarias. Dicha distribución se crea a partir de una ya existente, a la cual, se le aplican una serie de modificaciones con el fin de ajustarla a las características y necesidades específicas de la organización; proceso que en materia de software libre es denominado remasterización. Este proceso incluye diversos cambios, tales como, modificaciones en los ficheros del sistema, en la interfaz gráfica, la construcción y ejecución de scripts, la instalación y desinstalación de aplicaciones de software, entre otros. Posteriormente, mediante una herramienta especializada se genera un archivo en formato ISO que corresponde al sistema operativo final con todas las nuevas características incluidas, el cual, puede ser copiado a un medio físico como un disco compacto que luego permite instalar la distribución en un equipo de cómputo determinado. Este proyecto involucró varias etapas que iniciaron con un intenso trabajo de investigación que incluyó un sondeo que fue aplicado a un grupo de funcionarios del campus Omar Dengo, con la finalidad de conocer la situación de la Universidad respecto a las aplicaciones de software más utilizadas. Seguidamente, se realizó un análisis para definir cuáles de esas aplicaciones debían incluirse en la distribución, con la salvedad de agregar solamente aquellas que fueran de código abierto. También se implementó un repositorio de componentes de software o mirror en las instalaciones de la Dirección de Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación de la Universidad (DTIC), para proporcionarle a la distribución un adecuado soporte. Se trata de un servidor virtualizado que contiene las actualizaciones de la distribución tomada como base - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - en sus arquitecturas de 32 y 64 bits. Además, incluye los paquetes de actualización de las aplicaciones ya integradas al sistema operativo, como, por ejemplo, el paquete ofimático. Otra parte importante, fue la generación de ficheros de comandos (scripts) para instalar las aplicaciones de software previamente aprobadas y que fueron clasificadas en dos grupos: sector administrativo y la Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales (FCEN); considerando el tipo de funcionario y el tipo de software. También se construyeron los scripts para configurar el repositorio y mantenerlo actualizado. En relación a la imagen visual que ofrece el sistema, se llevó a cabo un trabajo de personalización muy detallado que involucró el diseño de una serie de fondos de pantalla alusivos a la UNA, la modificación de algunos aspectos de despliegue, tales como, la pantalla de arranque (splash) y el conjunto de íconos del escritorio. Todo esto, empleando la paleta de colores oficiales, el escudo, la firma y otros elementos distintivos de la institución. Finalmente, luego del trabajo realizado para este proyecto, se puede resumir que la principal limitante encontrada fue la poca información referente al desarrollo de una remasterización, lo que obligó a investigar, adaptar y probar continuamente para lograr un sistema que cumpliera con los propósitos establecidos. También fue evidente el hecho que existen pocos ejemplos en América Latina que sirvieran de apoyo. Dentro de los puntos positivos, hay que destacar la motivación y el empeño por haber incursionado en un área tan novedosa y retadora como esta, la recompensa por haber logrado los objetivos planteados, pero sobre todo, la importancia del conocimiento obtenido, el cual, puede ser compartido en el futuro para llevar a cabo proyectos similares que utilicen o se basen en software libre. Por último, es necesario expresar la satisfacción que genera entregar un producto que cumple con las expectativas propuestas y que está disponible para ser implementado por la Universidad en el corto plazo.

The following graduation project consists of developing a customized GNU/Linux distribution for the National University (UNA) that supports the work of university officials in the performance of their daily duties. Said distribution is created from an existing one, to which a series of modifications are applied in order to adjust it to the characteristics and specific needs of the organization; process that in terms of free software is called remastering. This process includes various changes, such as modifications to system files, to the graphical interface, the construction and execution of scripts, the installation and uninstallation of software applications, among others. Subsequently, using a specialized tool, an ISO format file is generated that corresponds to the final operating system with all the new features included, which can be copied to a physical medium such as a compact disc that later allows the distribution to be installed on a computer determined computation. This project involved several stages that began with intense research work that included a survey that was applied to a group of officials from the Omar Dengo campus, in order to find out the situation of the University regarding the most used software applications. Next, an analysis was carried out to define which of these applications should be included in the distribution, with the exception of adding only those that were open source. A repository of software components or mirrors was also implemented at the facilities of the Information and Communication Technologies Directorate of the University (DTIC), to provide the distribution with adequate support. It is a virtualized server that contains the updates of the distribution taken as base - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - in its 32 and 64-bit architectures. In addition, it includes the update packages for the applications already integrated into the operating system, such as the office suite. Another important part was the generation of command files (scripts) to install previously approved software applications and which were classified into two groups: administrative sector and the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (FCEN); considering the type of employee and the type of software. Scripts to configure the repository and keep it updated were also built. In relation to the visual image offered by the system, a very detailed customization work was carried out that involved the design of a series of wallpapers alluding to UNA, the modification of some display aspects, such as the screen boot (splash) and desktop icon set. All this, using the official color palette, the shield, the signature and other distinctive elements of the institution. Finally, after the work carried out for this project, it can be summarized that the main limitation found was the little information regarding the development of a remastering, which made it necessary to continuously investigate, adapt and test to achieve a system that fulfilled the established purposes. Also evident was the fact that there are few supportive examples in Latin America. Among the positive points, it is necessary to highlight the motivation and commitment to have ventured into an area as novel and challenging as this one, the reward for having achieved the objectives set, but above all, the importance of the knowledge obtained, which can be shared in the future to carry out similar projects that use or are based on free software. Finally, it is necessary to express the satisfaction generated by delivering a product that meets the proposed expectations and that is available to be implemented by the University in the short term.
