Estructura de la comunidad de peces de la zona arrecifal de Puerto Viejo - Punta Mona, Limón, Costa Rica

Abstract

Este es uno de los pocos estudios de peces realizados en el Caribe costarricense. El trabajo se centró en la estructura de la comunidad de peces de la zona arrecifal de Puerto Viejo-Punta Mona, Limón; con el fin de aportar recomendaciones específicas de manejo costero. Se realizaron censos visuales submarinos durante los meses de junio y Setiembre del 2010, mediante transectos de 20x5 metros en cinco sitios del área marina denominados: Puerto, Cócles, Uva, Manzanillo y Mona. Se identificaron los peces, así como sus y se determinó la cobertura de sustrato y algunos parámetros físicos del hábitat submarino. Los muestreos se ubicaron en el área expuesta y protegida de la zona arrecifal, a dos rangos de profundidad: 2-6 metros y 6-12 metros. En total se realizaron 40 transectos y se contaron 2283 individuos de 87 especies de peces, pertenecientes a 36 familias. El muestreo en Puerto, fue el que presentó mayor diversidad (índice de Shannon = 3.13), riqueza relativa (Índice de Margalef = 8.3), así como mayor densidad de peces 0.74 ind/m2. Este lugar se ubica fuera del área marina protegida del Refugio de Vida Silvestre Gandoca - Manzanilto, y presenta mayor profundidad y lejana a la costa. Por otro lado, los muestreos en Cócles y Mona, fueron los que presentaron menor diversidad (índice de Shannon = 2.26 y 2.63), riqueza relativa (Indice de Margalef = 4.1 y 5.0), así como menor densidad de peces (0.53 y 0.40 ind/m2, respectivamente). Estos sitios se caracterizaron por presentar menor profundidad y cercanía a la costa, asf como mayor cantidad de sólidos en el agua marina. Las especies de peces más abundantes fueron Stegastes spp., Thalassoma bifasciatum y Acanthurus bahianus. Las tallas de peces observadas en este estudio, son menores que las reportadas para el resto del Caribe. La cobertura de sustrato de la zona arrecifal, se caracterizó por mayor presencia de macroalgas. Se desarrollaron encuestas y entrevistas semiestructuradas a personas clave, para complementar la información ecológica y proporcionar recomendaciones de manejo. Los participantes mencionan como mayor presión sobre el hábitat acuático, agroquímicos provenientes de zonas agrícolas aledañas. La participación de la comunidad local, para el manejo del área marina y costera de la zona de estudio, es fundamental para conservar de manera eficaz, muchas especies marinas de importancia ecológica y económica.

This is one of the few fish studies conducted in the Costa Rican Caribbean. The work focused on the structure of the fish community in the Puerto Viejo-Punta Mona reef zone, Limón; in order to provide specific recommendations for coastal management. Underwater visual censuses were carried out during the months of June and September 2010, through 20x5 meter transects in five sites in the marine area called: Puerto, Cócles, Uva, Manzanillo and Mona. The fish were identified, as well as their substratum cover and some physical parameters of the underwater habitat were determined. The samples were located in the exposed and protected area of ​​the reef zone, at two depth ranges: 2-6 meters and 6-12 meters. In total, 40 transects were carried out and 2283 individuals of 87 fish species, belonging to 36 families, were counted. The sampling in Puerto, was the one that presented the greatest diversity (Shannon index = 3.13), relative richness (Margalef index = 8.3), as well as the highest density of fish 0.74 ind/m2. This place is located outside the protected marine area of ​​the Gandoca - Manzanilto Wildlife Refuge, and is deeper and farther from the coast. On the other hand, the samplings in Cócles and Mona were the ones with the lowest diversity (Shannon index = 2.26 and 2.63), relative richness (Margalef index = 4.1 and 5.0), as well as the lowest density of fish (0.53 and 0.40 ind /m2, respectively). These sites were characterized by less depth and proximity to the coast, as well as a greater amount of solids in the seawater. The most abundant fish species were Stegastes spp., Thalassoma bifasciatum and Acanthurus bahianus. The sizes of fish observed in this study are smaller than those reported for the rest of the Caribbean. The substrate coverage of the reef zone was characterized by a greater presence of macroalgae. Surveys and semi-structured interviews with key people were developed to complement the ecological information and provide management recommendations. The participants mention as greater pressure on the aquatic habitat, agrochemicals from neighboring agricultural areas. The participation of the local community, for the management of the marine and coastal area of ​​the study area, is essential to effectively conserve many marine species of ecological and economic importance.
